Proximity marketing without an app: how it works with Wallet.

Apple Wallet and Google Wallet can bring a pass forward when its holder is near a relevant location, but they work differently. This guide separates the real capability from traditional advertising geofencing and shows how to connect it to measurable return.

01

What proximity means inside Wallet

The business adds locations to a pass the customer has already saved. The operating system evaluates whether that pass is relevant near the venue; this is not a campaign that freely tracks everyone around a store.

02

Apple surfaces the relevant pass

Apple Wallet uses pass locations to show it on the lock screen when the system considers it relevant. Apple decides the exact radius and final appearance; the pass can include short location-related text.

  • Up to 10 relevant locations per pass
  • Evaluation performed by the system
  • Contextual location text
  • Real-device verification required
03

Google can show a nearby alert

Google Wallet uses merchant locations to notify the holder of a saved pass after they enter and dwell within an area defined by Google. Notifications and precise always-on location access must be enabled.

  • Up to 10 locations per class and 10 per object
  • Alert copy controlled by Google
  • Hidden after leaving the area
  • Available for regular pass types
04

Use cases that benefit from the signal

Proximity works when it unlocks one specific action: redeem an in-store coupon, show a membership pass, complete stamps, remember a booking or open directions. The benefit should be clear before customers walk in.

05

Measure without inventing impressions

Measurement is designed around an observable outcome. A code, link, booking or redemption connects the activation to return without assuming that every relevant pass became a viewed notification.

  • UTM per campaign or venue
  • Coupon code
  • Scan or validated visit
  • Return comparison

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as advertising geofencing?

No. The person must have saved a pass first, and the Wallet system controls relevance, permissions and presentation.

Can I select the exact radius?

Not equivalently across both platforms. Apple and Google keep their own proximity decisions, so the experience must use their current capabilities.

What should the business explain to customers?

It should explain the programme, the pass purpose, applicable lawful basis and benefit terms. Location permissions are separately managed on the device and Wallet platform.
